The best it can happen to a brioche
“The best it can happen to a brioche is to be buttered”.
This is the beginning of the novel, whose author Pablo Tusset, sets in Barcelona. The protagonist, Pablo Miralles is the second-born of a Catalan whealthy family. This arrogant, idle thirty-year-old sharing a joint and a glass of spirits is fond of the Internet. He has take the role of detective to investigate the sudden disappearance of his older brother Sebastián with his secretary. To find Sebastián, with the help of some friends like him members of the “Metaphysical Club”a philosophy web site, Pablo has to solve an enigma hidden in a tale. This tale will lead him to meet an organization responsible for his brother’s despair, as he will discover in the end.
The events take place during the eve of St. John’s day and they revolve around a mysterious house outside of which a red cloth was raised… A former “flame”, Fina will cooperate with Pablo on his investigations. A couple of detectives, father and son, is also following Sebastián footprints.
Thoug it is a detective novel, one of my favourite literary genre, I didn’t like it very much, because Pablo’s ups and downs as detective were side by side with some “venereal digressions”, useless in my opinion, at least for what concerns the story. The descriptions of characters and places are very detailed and it seems as if they are alive, but this can also be misleading from the main subject.
We are, certainly, dealing with a particular detective novel, from the lexical point of view also, in which we find typical words of the computer language, maybe thanks to the author’s primary job, also, right in the computer field. For example: Pablo works out the enigma thanks to the cooperation of a young hacker; to log in the site, he needs a password, he will receive through an e-mail ; he gets in touch with his friends in a chat.
